Inside the Mind of Jess Wass - Job Search Tips

Hi Reader!

This month’s focus is all about career clarity. Next month we’ll shift our focus towards company culture, so stay tuned for that content if that's more relevant for you.

As you have probably heard by now, I’m currently registering new clients for my last Career Clarity Coaching Program cohort of 2023. If you know someone who could use some help finding more clarity, purpose, and redirection in their career over the course of 90 days, then send them my information or the link above.

And don't forget that there is an Early Bird bonus of $300 off for anyone who schedules a consultation call with me before the end of this week and registers for the Career Clarity Coaching Program.

For now, let’s talk more about what happens AFTER you gain more clarity in the direction you want to take your career. Let’s talk more about the job search process.

The job search process can be very challenging and mentally taxing. The best advice I can give for folks navigating that process is to approach the process analytically and curiously.

Analytics are your best friend in the job search process. Why? Because inevitably you’ll get stuck at some point.

However, the most successful candidates are the ones who can quickly identify where they are getting stuck and then make the right changes that best target the specific problem.

For example, I had a client who was getting frustrated after not hearing back from 1 job application they were really excited about.

One is not enough. Nothing can be ascertained from one application.

So I encouraged my client to set a goal to apply to 10 jobs each week for the next 2 weeks. Why?

Because we can start to identify patterns after 20 applications. Even better after 50 applications.

Here are the general rules you can follow once you review your analytics and identify where you are getting stuck:

👻 Not hearing anything or getting any phone screen interviews? Your resume is the problem. Tweak it or shift the types of jobs you are targeting (or both).

📞 Received 2-3 phone screen interviews, but didn’t get to the next round interview? Ignore your resume and instead focus on better articulating your skills and experience.

🥇 Had 3-4 final round interviews, but didn’t receive any offers (always the Bridesmaid never the Bride)? Focus on closing and selling yourself.

The key is that you need to be able to identify where you are getting stuck. So keep track, whether it’s a super sophisticated excel spreadsheet or just a simple list.

P.s. Let's also take a moment to wish my big brother a very Happy Birthday today! He normally resides in Poland but happens to be in town for us to celebrate together this year. I'm feeling thankful for the time we get to spend together!
